The structure of the new Makarios house is finally finished. Upon our return from the states in April, Miguel, Riley and I began prepping to pour the third floor roof with the rest of our construction team. After forms were completed and steel was tied we scheduled a pump truck and concrete. Due to an opening in the concrete company’s schedule we were able to pour a few days earlier than expected. However, trucks showed up late in the afternoon and before we were able to begin the sun started to set. We were told a spotlight and generator would be brought out to us for our late night work. Unfortunately, the company’s portable generator would not work. So, what do you do when you have 7 guys standing on a roof 38 feet up with 45 yards of concrete at 7:30 pm without lights? Logic told me to cancel the pour and have the company incur the loss because they could not provide a promised service. However, logic is not always the accepted answer here. Instead, all 7 of us opened our cell phones for light and continued with the pour. After 1-1/2 hours of pouring we located a small flashlight which compared to cell phone light put off brightness like the sun. Although it was a little dangerous most of the night pour consisted of laughter and good conversation. We wrapped up around 10 pm with anxious expectation of what the roof would look like in the light of day. We were pleasantly surprised the following morning to find we hadn’t missed any spots and the surface was pretty evenly poured.
