Cafe Makarios coffee is grown on a 350 acre ecological reserve located high in the Central Mountain Range of the Dominican Republic. The plantation has been certified organic and produces a very smooth Caribbean brew with good body, a rich cocoa flavor and mid acidity. The coffee is grown under a diverse multi leveled shade canopy that is home to a multitude of bird life as well as offering protection for the many species of other wild life endemic of the Dominican Republic. Coffee on the plantation is harvested using fair trade practices.

Hurricane George destroyed access to the area in 1998, and the plantation was abandoned until 2003. Since then, the owners have been in a process of restoring the mountain to its original beauty. They have rehabilitated the land to rejuvenate the old, unproductive coffee plants. Heavy reforestation has increased the quality of the shade canopy over the coffee as well as restored the mountain to its original forest density. This has required the mass removal of secondary noxious weeds and undergrowth as well as clearing of more then 100 acres of land in preparation for the replanting of trees. More than 50,000 trees of varying species have been replanted. The plantation is unique in that there are innumerable springs which serve as a primary source for drinking water for La Angostura, the village located just below it.
