Makarios partners with the Livesay family and Heartline Ministries for development work in Haiti. In a blog by Troy Livesay on June 8th, 2010 he writes,
“I will be joining the Makarios team acting as a liaison to the other half of the island – working togehter with Pastor Mares and assisting in forming partnerships with existing ministries in Haiti. We will be joining some wonderful servants to the Haitian people that serve with the same goals of the Makarios team in the D.R. Some of the avenues we are exploring at present include funding a specialized feeding program being used in a handful of clinics to treat the worst forms of malnutrition in children, and assisting in the construction of a labor and delivery clinic for Haitian women.”

Since then, their program has been targeting severely malnourished children using ‘Medika Mamba’ – an energy dense peanut butter, significantly fortified with protein and nutritional supplements. The name Medika Mamba means “peanut butter medicine” in Creole. It is produced by an organization called Meds & Food For Kids.
They have seen firsthand that this product is culturally accepted, very effective, and in their opinion truly amazing. The Medika Mamba is also locally produced, which helps Haiti even more by providing many jobs in production while bolstering the economy and encouraging agricultural development.
With the cholera outbreak in late 2010, we have partnered with Pastor Mares to provide resources necessary for oral rehydration therapy for those afflicted by cholera. Additionally, Makarios was able to give water filtration systems thereby enabling access to clean water and preventing the spread of cholera among people in Haiti.
Makarios will continue to remain involved with Haiti as issues arise. We greatly value our relationship with the Livesays and Pastor Mares and the work they are doing there. Through continued communication with them, we hope to remain a part of the rebuilding and replenishing of our island-neighbors.
